What is Barak Fabric?
Our bags are made out of Barak fabric. It is a shrunk woolen fabric developed over the centuries in Afghanistan’s high mountain country, particularly in Bamyan province. The fabric is used to combat the harsh winters, below-freezing temperatures, snow, and fierce winds.
Step one
Barak starts its journey as unrefined wool, a fluffy mass full of potential. First, it undergoes a meticulous cleaning process, shedding dirt and impurities. Next, the wool is carefully combed to untangle and align the fiber, preparing it for the transformation ahead. Finally, it is spun into yarn, ready to become the foundation for beautiful creations.
Step two
This yarn plays a vital role as both the warp and weft on a four harness wool loom, weaving together to create a beautifully tightly woven fabric. This process brings together artistry and craftsmanship, resulting in a piece that carries both purpose and tradition.
step three
After five to eight meters of fabric have been meticulously crafted, we carefully assess its quality through a final treatment process, called the fulling process, that includes boiling and beating. This step is vital for enhancing the fabric's characteristics, and we truly value the effort put into every creation.
step four
After going through this process, the Barak fabric is gently rolled around a round wooden core. This careful step helps ensure it dries evenly and flat, preserving its quality and beauty.
step five
Once the fabric is prepared with care, it is lovingly sewn into a bag and beautifully embroidered in a traditional Afganistan fashion, ensuring that each piece reflects the thought and effort put into it.
